Position Purpose

Responsible for community sign language interpreter referral services for programs in both Arizona and New Mexico. Processes interpreter requests, schedules staff and contract interpreters by pairing appropriately skilled interpreters with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind consumers according to the linguistic preferences of the client as well as the unique assignment demands, and confirms interpreting schedules.  Documents interpreting hours for billing purposes and inputs payroll/billing data for processing.  Assists in negotiating new agreements and billing arrangements for interpreting services.  Maintains current and accurate information for contract interpreters, consumers and billing actions.  Position may from time to time be stressful and require a high demand of performance. May perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Essential Functions

  • Receives and processes interpreter requests; schedules staff and contracted interpreters matching interpreting skill level and experience with the demands of the situation with consideration given to the preference of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing consumers, socio-cultural and linguistic demands of the situation
  • Confirms interpreting schedule with interpreters, deaf consumers and businesses or organizations
  • Monitors and enters after hour requests as they are reported in accordance with monthly billing cycles
  • May assist with processing interpreter requests as needed
  • Enters interpreter payroll and billing information into computer and documents interpreting hours for billing purposes
  • Assists supervisor with negotiating new agreements or billing arrangements for interpreting services
  • Receives and processes requests for information regarding ADA and legal obligations for the provision of interpreters
  • Maintains current information for contracted interpreters, consumers and billing actions
  • Assists department with other assignments or special projects related to the interpreting service program
  • May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business

Minimum Qualifications 

Suitable work experience may be considered as transferable skills in order to meet minimum requirements of the position and will be considered by the Corporate Director of Human Resources.

  • Associates Degree in related field
  • Ability to see broader issues affecting the interpreting field and its customers
  • Critical thinking skills related to the interpreting area
  • Ability to multi task as evidenced in past work history
  • People skills as evidenced by past work history
  • 1 year of experience in deafness as evidenced through personal experience or education
  • 1 year of experience in data entry, or use of databases
  • Pass drug screening
  • Obtain State of Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card and pass drug screening
  • Valid Arizona Driver License, proof of insurance and Arizona Motor Vehicle Division 39 month Motor Vehicle Report

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in related field
  • Additional years of directly related experience
  • 1 year of customer service experience
  • 2 years of experience in the field of interpreting
  • State or National certification
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and/or Native Signer
  • 1 year experience scheduling interpreters, or experience with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf-Blind community
