Recovery Coach

About this position:

Location: Payson/Globe

The Arizona Families F.I.R.S.T (AFF) service provides specialized substance abuse treatment services to individuals, parents, caregivers and families referred by the Department of Child Safety (DCS) whose substance abuse is a barrier to strengthening, stabilizing, preserving and reunifying with their families, and promoting self-sufficiency in the workplace. AFF provides an array of structured interventions to reduce or eliminate abuse and dependence on alcohol and other drugs and to address other adverse conditions related to substance abuse. Interventions range from outpatient, inpatient and residential settings including detoxification, methadone maintenance and recovery support services. Northeast Region: Covers Graham and Greenlee Counties.

Services may include, but are not limited to parenting education, substance abuse counseling, communication skills training, domestic violence intervention and/or education, behavioral management/modification, and development of linkages to community resources.

Recovery Coach

The goals of initial outreach are to establish rapport with the client, address client hesitancies and any other barriers to attending treatment and obtain consent to release confidential substance use information. The role of the coach is critical to providing the client a "peer mentor" who has experienced involvement with child welfare as well as substance abuse or behavioral health treatment and demonstrates a successful substance-free recovery journey. The coach who can engage, assist and relate to the challenges faced by the client and family has a greater likelihood of maintaining the client engaged in treatment. The Recovery Coach works closely with the assigned Case Coordinator to assist the client and family to engage in treatment and supports that assist them to reach greater stability and parental capacity.

Essential Functions

  • Provides outreach, orientation, engagement and re-engagement services within required timeframes
  • Responsible for receipt of new referrals, outreach and engagement of clients and their family, in-person, within 24 hours of referral.
  • Completes the AFF intake process with client and family members
  • Completes required documentation post-intake for transfer to case coordinator and on-going weekly documentation
  • Provides Substance Abuse Awareness Education sessions, both individually and group
  • Manages an on-going caseload
  • Responsible for continued outreach and engagement of clients through telephone calls, home visits, and ongoing communication with all members of the substance abuse treatment team
  • Available to provide services, in emergencies, twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week
  • May require evening and weekend work on occasion and willingness to provide on-call for emergencies as part of a rotation
  • Provides services in a culturally appropriate and trauma informed manner
  • Understands and complies with the mandatory reporting of suspected or vulnerable adult maltreatment
  • Promote ongoing commitment to excellence and continual quality improvement to ensure the highest quality of services to our staff and clients
  • Required to drive to communities and client homes where services are provided
  • May drive company or personal vehicle on agency business

Minimum Qualifications

Suitable work experience may be considered as transferable skills in order to meet minimum requirements of the position and will be considered by the Corporate Director of Human Resources.

  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • One year of continuous work experience
  • Has been a behavioral health service recipient or substance use treatment recipient
  • Has been a parent, guardian, or custodian in a DCS investigation or ongoing services case, and has completed the goals and objectives related to substance abuse treatment and recovery maintenance, resulting in AFF client and clinician agreement on AFF case closure, and whose DCS case has been closed for at least one year
  • Has remained substance-free for a minimum of one year following treatment
  • Is at least 21 years of age
  • Is a paraprofessional with training and/or certification in a substance use disorder or Recovery Coach Program. All Recovery Coaches shall meet the requirements and qualifications as outlined in AHCCCS AMPM963 policy
  • Ability to relate to families of varied lifestyles, backgrounds, and ethnicities
  • Must be flexible and able to work with the uniqueness of each client
  • Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the agency and community
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, squat, sit on floor and ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs and steps
  • Requires considerable work outside of the office and substantial driving; requires evening and weekend work on occasion and willingness to be on-call for emergencies
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Obtain State of Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Valid Arizona Driver License, proof of insurance and Arizona Motor Vehicle division 39 months Motor Vehicle Report
  • Shall not have been placed on probation or parole for the last thirty-six (36) months from present date.
  • Shall not have any civil, criminal, or juvenile restraining orders within the thirty-six (36) months from present date

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Human Service or Behavior Health-related area
  • Additional years of directly related experience
  • Bilingual, English / Spanish verbal and written
